Tianjin Neurosurgical Institute

 

Established in 1993, Tianjin Neurosurgical Institute is composed of 14 laboratories, including neuro-cytology, neuro-biochemistry, animal, neuropathology, microsurgery, experimental neurosurgery, craniocerebral-trauma, hypothermia, interventional intravascular therapy, neuro-radiology, neuro-electrophysiology, hyperbaric oxygen, micro-invasive therapy and neuro-epidemiology laboratories.

 

Neuro-biochemistry laboratory has advanced biochemical and molecular biological apparatus, such as real-time PCR instrument, protein analysis system, two-dimensional electrophoresis system, capillary electrophoresis, microdialysis analyzer, ultraviolet spectrophotometer, freeze dryer, etc. The study is mainly engaged in molecular and protein level research.

 

Neuro-cytology laboratory possesses the perfect cell culture instruments and techniques for the study on neural stem cell and glial cell, especially in neural stem cell differentiation, which keeps ahead in China. Successively conducted drug sensitivity test and neural stem cell transplantation experiment provide scientific basis for clinical treatment.

 

Animal laboratory has clean experimental animal culture room and operating room, advanced fluid percussion instrument, laser doppler blood flow monitor, stereotaxic apparatus, isolated  ventilate  cage, in which the experiments of traumatic brain injury model, cerebral hemorrhage model, subarachnoid hemorrhage model, spinal cord injury model and many other kinds of clinical disease model can be undertaken.

 

Neurosurgery anatomy laboratory has six Zeiss microscopes and is equipped with surgical instruments, miniature grinding drill, negative pressure aspirator, photographic equipment and so on. U.S. Dow Corning silica gel is used to perfuse vessels for providing trainings for young clinical surgeons and reducing the risk of surgery, which plays an important role in clinical microsurgical and clinical anatomy research.


Neuropathology laboratory provides pathological diagnosis of CNS tumor. The neuro-radiology laboratory is a medical technical department which incorporates examination, scientific research and teaching. It possesses one 1.5 SIGNA superconductive MRI (US, GE company), two PQ2000SV spinal CT (PICKER company), and one ADV ANTX DSA (US, GE company).

 

Neuro-electrophysiology laboratory has obtained outstanding achievements in EEG studies of epilepsy and somnipathy, and EMG studies of evoked potential (EP) and event-related potential (ERP), especially in the EEG studies of children benign focal epilepsy and evoked potential studies of pituitary tumor and cerebellopontine angle tumor.

 

Hyperbaric oxygen laboratory mainly engages in the treatment for cranio-cerebral injury before and after operation, cerebral edema, cerebral vascular disease, delayed encephalopathy and persistent vegetative state after the acute carbon monoxide poisoning, etc. In this laboratory, sudden deafness, arteriovenous obstruction of eye fundus and other diseases with hyperbaric oxygen are also treated. Animal and clinical studies on hyperbaric oxygen therapy for severe head injury and cerebral edema are also carried out.

 

Since 1993, the institute has undertaken many national and municipal scientific tasks, and gained second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award for “Research on acute severe brain injury using hypothermia in clinic and experiments” in 2004, and also gained many achievements in the aspects of disciplinary building-up, scientific research and the personnel training system. The basic and clinical researches aim at resolving problems in clinical diagnosis and treatment of neurology and neurosurgery.
